As 2024 winds down, it’s time to look back on a year of golf that can only be described as... unpredictable. Once upon a time, I was a solid 7 handicap—consistent, reliable, and capable of playing some pretty decent golf. These days? Let’s just say my game has a mind of its own. But that’s part of the fun, right? Here’s a look at my year in golf, Big Fred style.
Driving Range Sessions: 57
These were my moments of hope. Whether I was searching for that elusive tempo or trying to cure my snap hook, the range was where I believed anything was possible. Occasionally, I even hit a bucket full of beauties. Occasionally.
Rounds Played: 20
That’s 20 rounds of unexpected brilliance, frustrating misses, and a whole lot of laughs. On a good day, I’d find flashes of my former self—hitting greens, sinking putts, and feeling unstoppable. On a bad day, well... I got really good at finding my ball in the woods.
Balls Lost: 172
You’d think I’d have learned to pack fewer snacks and more balls in my bag by now. Water hazards and thick rough are my biggest fans—they see me often enough.
Birdies Made: 8
When they happened, they were glorious. The kind of shots that keep you coming back, make you wonder if you’ve still “got it,” and fuel just enough confidence to book the next round.
Drinks Consumed on the Course: 60
A few cold ones on the course? Non-negotiable. Whether it’s celebrating a great shot or drowning the frustration of a bad one, the 19th hole often started somewhere around the 13th.
Putts Missed Under 3 Feet: 39
Let’s not talk about these. They’re the reason I still use my Green Reader Poker Chip. The greens, much like my game, were unpredictable this year.
3-Putts Made: 61
If there’s one stat that haunts me, it’s this one. Every 3-putt feels like an opportunity missed, but hey—at least I’m getting plenty of putting practice. If only I could make the first one count more often.
There were moments when it all clicked. A perfect 5-iron that landed within 10 feet of the pin. A chip-in for par that had my group convinced I still had “it.” Those fleeting moments of brilliance reminded me of why I fell in love with golf in the first place.
Of course, there were also plenty of hooks, duffs, and drives that seemed magnetically drawn to out-of-bounds markers. But even on the worst days, the laughs, the camaraderie, and the occasional well-struck shot made it all worth it.
How was your golf year? Whether you’re hitting greens like a pro or hunting for balls like me, every round tells a story. Reflect on your best moments, your funniest fails, and what made this year special for you.
Here’s to more laughs, fewer lost balls, and plenty of cold drinks in 2025. Play bad, look good, and see you on the course. Cheers! 🎉
