It was supposed to be just a quick round. That’s what he told his family over breakfast. "I’ll be back by lunch," he assured them with confidence, golf bag slung over his shoulder. But as any seasoned golfer knows, the game rarely goes as planned—and neither does the time spent at the legendary 19th hole.
Fast forward to 11:47 PM. The front door creaks open, and there he stands: sunburned, sheepish, and clutching what appears to be a trophy… or is that a beer stein? The kids are asleep, his partner is glaring from the couch, and the only words that come out are: "It was a long round."
The truth, of course, is much more complicated. After a chaotic back nine that involved a record number of lost balls, questionable bets, and a miraculous chip-in from the bunker, he and his buddies found themselves lured by the siren call of the clubhouse bar. Stories were exchanged, egos inflated, and another round—of drinks, not golf—was ordered. One thing led to another, and suddenly the clock struck midnight faster than a missed three-footer.
This tale isn’t unique. Golfers worldwide share the same Achilles' heel: the 19th hole. It’s where friendships are solidified, bets are settled (or not), and the pain of triple bogeys is drowned in laughter and lager. It’s also why "I’ll be back by lunch" is the most dangerous lie a golfer can tell.
So, the next time someone you know grabs their clubs and promises a quick round, take it with a grain of salt. Or better yet, stock up on snacks and prepare for a long wait—because when the 19th hole calls, resistance is futile.
